🔍 How to Compare Omega-3 Fish Oil Fairly
1. Ignore "1000mg fish oil" and look for EPA and DHA
The 1000mg on the front of the box is the weight of the oil. The useful omega-3s are EPA and DHA, and they are only part of that weight. Many 1000mg softgels contain around 300mg of EPA plus DHA, while concentrated products contain 700mg or more. Always read the supplement facts panel for the EPA and DHA amounts.
2. Work out the price per 1000mg of EPA and DHA
Divide the price of the bottle by the number of softgels, then divide by the combined EPA and DHA in each softgel (in mg) and multiply by 1000. For example, a 30-softgel bottle at Rs 1,800 with 300mg of EPA and DHA per softgel costs about Rs 200 for each 1000mg. A 60-softgel bottle at Rs 4,000 with 720mg per softgel costs about Rs 93 for each 1000mg. The cheaper bottle on the shelf is not always the cheaper omega-3.
3. How much do you need?
The European Food Safety Authority advises about 250mg of EPA plus DHA a day for adults, and the American Heart Association suggests about 1g a day for people with existing heart disease, under a doctor's direction. The US FDA considers up to 5g a day of EPA and DHA from supplements safe, but supplement labels should not recommend more than 2g a day. Most healthy adults do not need high doses.
4. Check freshness, storage and certification

The US National Institutes of Health reviews the evidence on omega-3s. Studies that follow people who eat more fish link it to a lower risk of heart disease, but trials of supplements are mixed.
