Best Time to Take Creatine: Before or After Workout?
"Should I take creatine before or after my workout?" is one of the most common questions gym-goers in Pakistan ask. The short answer: taking it every day matters far more than the exact time. Here is what the research actually shows – and a simple routine you can follow.
⏱️ Before or After Workout? What the Studies Found
Two studies have tested this directly:
- Antonio & Ciccone (2013): 19 recreational male bodybuilders took 5g of creatine either immediately before or immediately after training for four weeks. Both groups gained strength and fat-free mass. Using a statistical method called magnitude-based inference, the authors concluded that taking creatine after the workout was possibly more beneficial – but the differences between groups were not statistically significant (Antonio & Ciccone, 2013).
- Dinan et al. (2022): 34 trained male and female athletes took 5g of creatine within 1 hour before or within 1 hour after training for 8 weeks (plus a placebo group). All groups improved, and the researchers found that the timing of creatine did not have any additional effect on strength or body composition (Dinan et al., 2022).
Bottom line: before or after training both work. If you want to follow the small edge suggested by the 2013 study, take it after your workout – but never skip a day because you missed the "perfect" time.
🔁 Why Daily Consistency Beats Timing
Creatine does not work like caffeine or a pre-workout that kicks in within 30 minutes. It works by gradually filling your muscle creatine stores. A normal diet only fills these stores to about 60–80%, and supplementing raises muscle creatine by roughly 20–40% (ISSN Position Stand, 2017).
Once your stores are full, 3–5g a day keeps them topped up. That is why the research-backed approach is simply: one serving, every day, including rest days (Antonio et al., 2021).
🥛 What Should You Mix Creatine With?
- Water – simplest option. Unflavoured creatine has almost no taste.
- A meal or a protein shake – the ISSN notes that taking creatine with carbohydrate, or carbohydrate and protein, has been reported to promote greater creatine retention (ISSN, 2017). In the 2022 timing study, athletes took their creatine together with whey protein and carbohydrate (Dinan et al., 2022).
- Juice – fine, and adds carbohydrate.

📅 A Simple Daily Creatine Routine
| Day | When to take 5g |
|---|---|
| Training day | After your workout, with your protein shake or post-workout meal (before training is fine too) |
| Rest day | Any time – most people take it with breakfast or lunch |
| Missed a day? | Just take your normal 5g the next day – no need to double up |
❓ Do You Need a Loading Phase?
No. A loading phase (about 20g a day in four doses for 5–7 days) fills your muscles faster, but research shows lower daily doses of 3–5g are effective on their own – they just take a few weeks longer (Antonio et al., 2021). For most people, one 5g scoop a day is simpler and easier on the stomach.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is it better to take creatine in the morning or at night?
Either works. There is no strong evidence that the time of day matters – what matters most is taking it every day.
Can I take creatine on an empty stomach?
Yes, but some people find it easier on the stomach with food. Taking it with a meal or protein shake may also help your body retain more creatine.
Should I take creatine on rest days?
Yes. Your muscle stores need topping up every day, not just on training days.
Can I mix creatine in my pre-workout?
Yes. Unflavoured creatine mixes into most drinks. Just make sure you are still getting a full daily dose.
